Canon 600EX-RT Speedlite – The New Flash

Two of these bad boys (Canon 600EX-RT), a Canon 5D Mark III, and five practice shots later, I got the photos above.  It is a pleasure to use these new flashes. The best compliment I can give these “speedlites”, is to buy a third.

The Spider, The Bee, and the Flies

I tried to go on a walk this sunny San Diego morning, but I did not make it 30 feet out the front door, before I found this spectacular photo opportunity.

This green spider captured the bee and several small flies (?) have jumped on board.

Video coming soon!

Rich Froning hitting Coors light in a can

Rich Froning, the fittest man on earth, using a bat.

I went to Wal-Mart and bought $300 dollars worth of goodies to smash with a bat.  Here you can see Rich sending a  red onion into a snowy field.  A pile of wood and debris was lit on fire to keep us warm during this photo shoot.

Dan Bailey won the 2011 CrossFit Open.  Out of 30,000+ competitors around the globe, this 26-year-old from Ohio, USA took first place.  Not only did Dan win the Open, but he took 6th place at the 2011 CrossFit Games in Carson, California.

This picture was taken at Rogue headquarters, Columbus Ohio.  It was a 2 hour shoot with Dan Bailey and Mikko Salo.  I wish it could have been a 4 hour shoot, these guys are great!

Graham Holmberg – the champ

In 2010, the fittest man alive was Graham Holmberg.  In 2011 he finished 4th place at the CrossFit Games.
These stats are mega impressive and definitely make Graham a front-runner for 2012.

This shot was captured in Graham’s gym in Columbus, Ohio in June of 2011, just prior to the CrossFit Games.

gas station bugs

Driving home from San Diego last night was memorable.  100 miles north of Los Angles on interstate 5, I stopped in at a gas station and found this awesome swarm of insects.  There were about 4-6 separate swarms.   The insects were harmles and were dying by the hundreds per second.  I don’t know why they were dying, I assume it was the end of their life cycle.  I am not sure if there were 5,000 or 50,000 insects, but there were a lot.  Although the swarms were huge, they were quiet.  I asked Hayley to get into the center of a swarm for a picture.

Assassin Bug

Assassin Bug

Here is an Assassin Bug using his (or her?) long rostrum to inject a lethal saliva that liquefies the insides of the prey, which are then sucked out.

I got lost driving in the south, I think it was Tennessee, and I stopped and walked into a field with my camera.   I must have shot 20 bugs including this Assassin Bug.   I have some photos with the 5X macro that show the rostrum (poison injecting, blood sucking device) penetrating the victim (coming soon).

A great flash is vital to capturing photos at 5X magnification.

Mother’s Day and the Canon 24mm

posted on 2011.05.17, under Flash, Lens, Photos

On Mother’s Day morning, before I saw my mom, I took out the 7D and the Canon Speedlite 580EX II. I snapped a couple of photos of a lady I met in front of Peet’s Coffee on Shattuck Ave, in Berkeley, California. She told me a story about her daughter and her daughter’s Chihuahua. She said, “when I sleep over my daughter’s house, we share a bed and the dog sleeps under the covers with us.” She also shared the details of her previous night in the shelter. She said that 5 girls jumped her and took her money. She claimed she did not provoke them, but that she was very drunk.

While I was talking with her, a passerby gave her a few dollars. She then went to the store and bought both herself and a random person she just met, a cup of coffee. She was generous with the little she had.
