Lizard on Lizard in Mombasa

When you can’t sleep, this is what you may see at sun rise in Mombasa.

It took me about 15 minutes to get close enough to this prehistoric guy, to land this shot and hundreds more.  The lens hood got as close as 2 inches from this guy.  I was stealth and patient, but the biggest reason I got this shot, was because this reptile did not want to leave his kill.

I shot photos and video for about 30 minutes.  Several hundred ants showed up on the seen within minutes and began biting the predatory lizard (and me).  The lizard was smart and simply dragged his kill 2 or 3 feet away from the attacking ants.

To get most of the shots, I had to lie flat on the ground.

Rita Benavidez at CrossFit Nor Cal Regionals – 2012

Rita does a 70lb dumbbell split snatch at the 2012 CrossFit Nor Cal Regionals.

This was the first stop on a 4 city tour (San Jose, Chicago, London, Copenhagen).  I did not want any check in luggage so I reduced the “joe the camera man” kit to just camera, lens, mic, hard drives, card reader, flashes (2) and computer.

It was painful, reducing the kit, but so far so good.  No C300 on this trip.  I have been using the Mark III plus a couple mics to shoot any video.

The camera bag has 3 lens, 100mm f/2.8 (used for these photos), 24mm f/1.4 and the Canon 65mm MP-E Macro lens.

Riding with your eyes closed

6AM London, England, I spot a stunt rider in the streets.   This man can navigate the busy streets of London with his eyes closed.
I shot humans on bicycles (in Trafalgar Square) for an hour today, using the Canon 100mm f/2.8.  A great lens for sure.

An epic all-star battle between these three CrossFit elite.

The 16-35mm is a good lens, even with noticeable distortion when completely wide on a full frame camera.

The Spider, The Bee, and the Flies

I tried to go on a walk this sunny San Diego morning, but I did not make it 30 feet out the front door, before I found this spectacular photo opportunity.

This green spider captured the bee and several small flies (?) have jumped on board.

Video coming soon!

It seemed impossible, to repeat as a CrossFit Games Champion, until Rich Froning arrived on the scene.  Rich put on a spectacular show for the packed house at the 2012 Central East CrossFit Games Regionals.

I carried two cameras at this event.

This photo was shot in Cookville, TN prior to Rich winning the 2011 CrossFit Games.  Rich was crowned the fittest man alive in 2011 and will defend his title on the weekend of July 12-15, 2012 in Carson, California at the 2012 CrossFit Games.

If Rich wins, he will be the first athlete to repeat victory.
